Expert care for your
colon, rectum & anus

Colorectal surgery covers a wide range of conditions affecting the large intestine (colon), rectum, and anus. These conditions range from common problems like haemorrhoids and anal fistulas, to more serious conditions such as colorectal cancer and diverticular disease.

Dr Cha uses the most advanced minimally invasive techniques available — including laparoscopic, robotic, and transanal approaches — to ensure the best possible outcomes with the least disruption to your life.

Early diagnosis is critical, particularly for colorectal cancer. If you have any concerns about your bowel health, do not delay — a consultation with Dr Cha could be life-saving.

Colorectal Conditions

Dr Cha manages the full spectrum of colorectal conditions, from benign to complex — with a focus on minimally invasive solutions wherever possible.

Colorectal Cancer
Critical Condition

Colorectal Cancer

Colorectal cancer is one of the most common cancers in Malaysia. It develops in the lining of the colon or rectum, often from polyps that grow over time. When caught early, it is highly treatable. Dr Cha performs laparoscopic and robotic colorectal resections, offering patients a less painful recovery with excellent oncological outcomes.

Symptoms to watch for include blood in stools, a change in bowel habits, unexplained weight loss, persistent abdominal discomfort, or a feeling that the bowel does not empty completely.

Common Condition

Haemorrhoids (Piles)

Haemorrhoids are swollen blood vessels in and around the rectum and anus. They are extremely common and can cause significant discomfort, bleeding, and itching. Treatment depends on severity — ranging from dietary and lifestyle changes, to minimally invasive office procedures, to surgical removal for more severe cases.

Dr Cha offers both surgical and non-surgical options, including haemorrhoidectomy, rubber band ligation, and stapled haemorrhoidopexy — tailored to the grade and severity of your condition.

  • Grade I–IV management
  • Rubber band ligation
  • Stapled haemorrhoidopexy
  • Surgical haemorrhoidectomy

Anal Fistula & Abscess

An anal abscess is a painful collection of pus near the anus, often caused by an infection of anal glands. If left untreated, an abscess can develop into an anal fistula — an abnormal tunnel connecting the inside of the anus to the skin outside. Both conditions require surgical treatment.

Dr Cha performs a range of fistula procedures depending on the complexity of the tract, including fistulotomy, seton placement, LIFT procedure, and advancement flap repair — always prioritising preservation of continence.

  • Abscess drainage
  • Fistulotomy
  • LIFT procedure
  • Seton placement

Diverticular Disease

Diverticular disease occurs when small pouches (diverticula) form in the wall of the colon. When these pouches become inflamed or infected, it leads to diverticulitis — causing severe abdominal pain, fever, and changes in bowel habits. Complications such as abscess, perforation, or fistula may require urgent surgical intervention.

Dr Cha manages both acute and elective cases. Elective laparoscopic sigmoid colectomy is offered to patients with recurrent diverticulitis to prevent future episodes and their complications.

NOSES —
No Abdominal Wound

Natural Orifice Specimen Extraction Surgery

NOSES represents the next natural progression of minimally invasive surgery. In a conventional laparoscopic or robotic colorectal operation, even with small keyhole incisions, a slightly larger wound is still needed to remove the surgical specimen from the body.

With NOSES, Dr Cha eliminates this extraction wound entirely. The resected bowel specimen is extracted through a natural orifice — the anus or vagina — leaving the abdomen with only tiny keyhole scars. The result is significantly less post-operative pain, a faster return to normal activity, and a better cosmetic outcome.

Dr Cha incorporates NOSES into both laparoscopic and robotic colorectal surgery, offering this technique to carefully selected patients where it is safe and appropriate.

🩹
No Extraction Wound

Specimen is removed through a natural orifice — no additional abdominal incision required.

💊
Less Post-op Pain

Smaller wounds mean significantly reduced pain and lower analgesic requirements after surgery.

Faster Recovery

Patients recover more quickly and return to daily activities sooner than with conventional techniques.

🏅
Better Cosmesis

Minimal scarring on the abdomen — only tiny keyhole marks where the instruments were inserted.

Colonoscopy —
see it early, treat it early

A colonoscopy is the gold standard for examining the entire colon and rectum. It allows Dr Cha to directly visualise the bowel lining, detect polyps, take biopsies, and in many cases remove abnormalities during the same procedure.

Colonoscopy is recommended for colorectal cancer screening, investigation of bleeding or change in bowel habits, and follow-up after previous polyp removal.

  1. 1
PreparationBowel preparation is done the day before to clear the colon for a clear view.
  2. 2
SedationYou will be comfortably sedated throughout the procedure — most patients feel nothing at all.
  3. 3
ExaminationA flexible camera is gently passed through the entire colon, taking around 20–30 minutes.

Surgical Approaches

Dr Cha selects the most appropriate surgical technique based on each patient's condition, anatomy, and recovery goals.

🔬

Laparoscopic Surgery

Keyhole surgery performed through small incisions using a camera and instruments. Results in less pain, faster recovery, and smaller scars compared to open surgery.

🤖

Robotic Surgery

Enhanced precision using robotic arms controlled by Dr Cha. Particularly beneficial for complex pelvic surgery such as rectal cancer resections where fine movements are critical.

🏥

Transanal (TAMIS / TEM)

Surgery performed through the anus for rectal tumours and polyps, avoiding any external incisions. Ideal for selected early rectal cancers and large rectal polyps.

⚕️

Open Surgery

Conventional open surgery remains an important option for complex cases, emergency presentations, or where minimally invasive access is not suitable.
